Bread has enough vitamins and minerals in it to nourish and sustain the physical body. But is bread all we need to physically exist? No. Is there more to life than getting up, going to school, to work, dealing with the teachers, with the “rat race,” coming home and feeding the children, indulging in some mindless watching of the television, and then going to bed to start it all over again in the morning? Is there more to us than just the outward appearance of this shell that we call our body? The Bible teaches that there is more to a person than just this physical body: “...and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NKJ)
If bread nourishes our physical body, then what nourishes our spirit and soul? Is it physical bread? Is it the knowledge of the world? Is it yoga? What is the source for spiritual nourishment?
When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Satan tempted Jesus by telling Him to turn the rocks into bread. Jesus answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God'" Matthew 4:4 (NKJ)
Bread will sustain the physical body for a relatively short period of time on this earth, but physical bread will not sustain our spirit or soul for eternity. Jesus proved this point in John 6:49 (NKJ). He said, "Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead.” Their great relatives ate of the manna that God had provided the children of Israel when they were wandering in the wilderness, but where are they now? They are dead, in the grave, their bodies have returned to dust.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” Jesus said, "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you..." John 6:27 (NKJ)
Jesus is the bread of life. John 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (NKJ) John chapter 6:63, tells us that the words of Christ are spirit and life. Not physical life but spiritual life! In another place Simon Peter answered Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” John 6:68 (NKJ) Jesus said in the book of Matthew, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Matt 24:35 (NKJ)
Jesus came so you may have life, and that you may have it more abundantly! (John 10:10 NKJ) Have you accepted this life? Do you want this life that can only be found in Christ?
